The Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona , or for short also the Conservatori del Liceu, is one of the most important and renowned music academies in Catalonia .

history

In 1837 the cultural association Liceu Filodramàtic was founded in Barcelona from Spanish military circles with the intention of creating a stage for the performance of Spanish-language theater and Italian opera. At the same time, citizens of Barcelona wanted to set up an academy for theater and singing. On April 27, 1838, the first music lessons took place in the Saló de Cent in the City Hall of Barcelona. In August 1838, classrooms in the former Montsió monastery were made available to the cultural association and the Liceu Filodramàtic de Montesion was opened. The co-founding military unit was dissolved and the music school continued to operate privately. In 1844, the conservatory, which had grown in number, was given a building site on the Rambla in exchange for the Montsió monastery , on which the former monastery of the Trinitarians had previously been located. In addition to the conservatory building, a theater was also to be built.

The foundation stone for the two building complexes was laid on April 11, 1845. On April 4, 1847, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the new conservatory were inaugurated. Due to economic difficulties and different objectives of the operating company of the Liceu and the shareholders in the theater company, the Conservatory and the Gran Teatre were administratively separated from each other in 1854 . Both institutions have remained artistically related to one another to this day. In 2007, during the celebration of the 170th anniversary of the Music Academy, the foundation stone was laid for the current Liceu building on Rambla, No. 86 instead. In 2009 the new Conservatory building was opened by Queen Sofia . On May 2, 2018, the 180th anniversary of the Conservatory was celebrated in the same Saló de Cent in the City Hall of Barcelona, where the first lessons were held in 1838.

Functions and operation through the ages

The Conservatory's mission has always been to provide the Gran Teatre with excellent artists. Thanks to its capable teaching staff, the Conservatory quickly acquired an excellent reputation for training singers and instrumentalists. The institution was not only of outstanding importance for the musical life of Barcelona; she also achieved a high artistic reputation worldwide.

In 1885 the new courses in composition , counterpoint and fugue were established. In addition, renowned European teachers such as the German composer Engelbert Humperdinck were hired as teachers. Since then, the name Conservatori del Liceu has been used for this institution. The Conservatori del Liceu was the cradle of professional music education in Catalonia. It was not until 1886 that the city established a public higher music school with the Barcelona Conservatory . As an institution, the Conservatori del Liceu took part in several world exhibitions (Vienna 1873, Barcelona 1888 and 1929, Antwerp 1894) and won prizes and a high international reputation.

In 1913, courses in acting were established. This faculty was the origin of what is now the Barcelona Theater Institute . In 1928 the first musicology course was introduced across Spain. From 1932 the Liceu set up branches in various Catalan cities (including Tarragona, Lleida, Girona, Andorra) and thus formed a network of music schools. In July 1936 the Liceu was nationalized. In the same year, the orchestral conducting course was set up, represented by the Catalan Joan Lamote de Grignon . In 2002 new courses for jazz , new music and flamenco were introduced. From 2010, the study programs were harmonized according to the Bologna process towards European educational standards
