Joan Lamote de Grignon i Bocquet
Joan Lamote de Grignon i Bocquet (born July 7, 1872 in Barcelona ; † March 11, 1949 there ) was a Catalan pianist, conductor and composer. As a pianist he was a member of the Catalan Pianist School .
life and work
Lamote de Grignon was born in July 1872 to parents of French origin in Sant Gervasi de Cassoles , now a district of Barcelona. At a young age, the family moved to Tortosa , where they owned land. Joan graduated from the Institut de Tarragona in 1887. He acquired his first musical knowledge from his teacher Josep Abarcat i Sebastià. He felt a strong urge to music, moved to Barcelona and enrolled at the Conservatori del Liceu . He studied composition with Antoni Nicolau , violin with T. Güell and Gabriel Balart and piano with Pere Tintorer . He performed particularly well on the latter instrument and was appointed piano lecturer at the Conservatori del Liceu in 1890 and later professor for Solfeo .
In 1902 he was appointed director of the Orchestra of the Associació Musical de Barcelona . In 1911 he founded the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra , which he also became director. In February 1913 he was a guest conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Blüthner Orchestra in Berlin with his own program. From 1914 he led the city chapel of Barcelona as the successor to Celestí Sadurní . Here he promoted young performers and worked with this ensemble on a remarkable program that was valued throughout Europe. Three years later he was appointed director of the Conservatori del Liceu . In 1939, after the Spanish Civil War , he was dismissed from all posts in Barcelona for collaborating with the enemy. In 1943 he founded the Orquestra de València , which he directed until 1949. He died on March 11, 1949. He was buried in the Cementiri de Sant Gervasi in Barcelona.
As a composer, Lamote has left an extensive body of work that includes opera, symphony, oratorios, songs, sardanas and religious music. This work was mainly created between 1894 and 1914. This work includes around 150 songs, the oratorio La nit de Nadal based on texts by Francesc Casas i Amigó (1906, The Holy Night), the lyrical drama Hesperia (1907), a symphonic trilogy, a Eucharistic mass for two voices and organ , Motets and spiritual songs as well as the piano work El parc d'atraccions . He wrote several sardanas and was a co-founder of the Cobla of Barcelona .
The personal works of Joan Lamote de Grignon are kept in the Biblioteca de Catalunya .

On July 31, 1893, he married Florentina Ribas i Mayol from Girona in Barcelona. The son of the couple Ricard Lamote de Grignon followed his father's path in both compositional and orchestral directions.
