Marià Obiols i Tramullas

Marià Obiols i Tramullas (born September 26, 1809 in Barcelona ; † December 11, 1888 there ) was a Catalan conductor, composer and music teacher. Obiols was the first music director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu .

life and work

Obiols began his music education under the direction of the composer and conductor Ramon Vilanova . From 1831 he studied with Saverio Mercadante in Milan .

When the Conservatori del Liceu was founded in 1838 , Obiols was appointed the institution's first director. He was also musical director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu . He held the position of director of the Consevatori del Liceu until the end of his life. He taught singing classes and harmony at this conservatory until 1886.

Thanks to Mercadante Obiols was able to premiere his opera Odio ed amore (Hate and Love) in Milan in 1837 . He also wrote the cantata Il regio imeneo on a text by Joan Cortada i Sala , which alluded to the wedding of Isabelle II and was performed on the occasion of the opening of the Gran Teatre del Liceu on April 4, 1847. Years later he premiered his operas Editta di Belcourt (1874) and Laura Debelan (1879) in the same opera house. Obiols also wrote chamber music and sacred music.
