life and work

Ramon Vilanova received music lessons from the guitar teacher Josep Ferrés in Barcelona from the age of 8. He continued this training in the chapel of the clergyman Jaume Domènec in Berga , where the family had to flee because of the French War . After returning to Barcelona, he continued his studies with Francesc Queralt and Mateu Ferrer and graduated.

In 1829 he went to Milan to study and worked with the Italian composers Gaetano Piantanida and Bonifazio Asioli . According to press reports at the time, he was employed as an assistant director in a theater in the city. In 1830, after his return from Italy, he was appointed conductor of the cathedral by the cathedral chapter . He left this position three years later to take on the direction of opera performances at the Teatre Principal de València . The death of Ferdinand VII resulted in the temporary closure of this theater due to state mourning. Then Vilanova returned to Barcelona.
