Vicenç Cuyàs (* 1816 in Palma ; † September 1, 1839 in Barcelona ) was a Catalan composer .

Life

Shortly after Cuyàs' birth, the family moved from Palma de Mallorca to Barcelona. At his father's request, the young Cuyàs began studying medicine, which he soon gave up. Inspired by the music of his time, he moved to the Acadèmia de la Llotja Conservatory , where he received lessons in piano, composition and harmony. One of his classmates was a well-known Catalan maestro named Ramon Vilanova . At the age of 19 the highly gifted Cuyàs saw the premiere of his Sinfonia primera. After various composition work and successes at private concerts, he began composing his first opera Ugo, conte di Parigi. His second and last opera, La Fattucchiera, followed in 1838 after only three months of writing. Cuyàs' father died of tuberculosis during opera rehearsals . Cuyàs - also seriously ill - was just able to see the last performance of his La Fattucchiera . As romantic and tragic as in a novella, Vicenç Cuyàs collapsed dead after the final scene.
