Felice Romani (born January 31, 1788 in Genoa , † January 28, 1865 in Moneglia ) was an Italian author and librettist of numerous operas.

Life

After studying at the University of Genoa , he traveled extensively through several European countries, including Spain, Greece, Germany and France. He then settled in Milan and became the main librettist at the local Teatro alla Scala . But he did not only commit himself to this stage. Compared to his many mediocre contemporary copywriters, his books were found to be superior in quality. Today he is therefore rightly classified as the most important Italian opera librettist of his time. His favorite composers were Gioachino Rossini , Gaetano Donizetti , Vincenzo Bellini and Simon Mayr . In addition to the almost 100 libretti, he also wrote poetry and translated French literature into his mother tongue.
