The European University of St. Petersburg ( Russian Европейский университет в Санкт-Петербурге ; English : European University at St. Petersburg ) is a private university for graduates founded in 1994, which is considered one of the leading universities for humanities and social sciences in Russia . As a university for higher semesters and graduates, the European University primarily trains doctoral candidates and students in their master’s programs . The Masters degrees (MA) from the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology are validated by the University of Helsinki .

In an English-language, international master's program in Russian and Eurasian Studies ( IMARES ; International Master of Arts in Russian Studies), predominantly foreign students from North American and Western European universities are studying, who also have Russian-language courses available if they have sufficient knowledge of Russian.

The university will u. a. supported by the Ford Foundation , MacArthur Foundation , Soros Foundation and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation . It offers master’s programs in economics , ethnology , history , art history , political science , sociology and other humanities.

In 2007 the university won a research project of the European Commission endowed with € 673,000 with the aim of improving knowledge about election observation in Russia. After being accused by President Putin of being an "agent of foreign interference", the project was terminated by the university on January 31, 2008. In "strange temporal coincidence" (NZZ), the university was inspected by the fire police, the Ministry of Justice and the education committee.

On February 8, 2008, before the inspection by the Education Committee, the university was closed for teaching operations because of violations of fire protection regulations.

On February 18, 2008, the Dzerzhinsky Federal Court confirmed the closure for a period of 90 days, after which it can be checked again for compliance with fire protection regulations.

On March 21, 2008, the Dzerzhinsky Federal Court allowed the university to reopen due to improvements in fire protection and subject to the condition that the measures be continued.

Graduates

Although the European University of St. Petersburg is still relatively young, it has already produced numerous outstanding graduates. Many alumni and graduates are scientifically active and have carried out their research and teaching activities at leading Russian, European and North American institutions such as u. a. Cambridge , Oxford , Harvard , Yale , University of Chicago , European University Institute (Florence, Italy), Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (Cologne) continued. Others work in the Russian government, international companies and organizations such as the World Bank , the United Nations Secretariat in New York , the US State Department and the European Commission .

In November 2008, graduates of the University in Europe joined forces in the non-profit association European University at Saint Petersburg Alumni (Europe) eV (also known as EUSP Alumni (Europe) eV ) based in Berlin. The members organize alumni meetings, act as a career network and support the European University and its students. Donations from the graduates and sponsors a. since 2009 financed own travel grants for students of the European University, which are awarded by the European alumni association.

Another, according to Andrei Kolesnikow, "ideologically motivated" revocation of the teaching license took place in September 2017; the license was granted again in summer 2018.
