Francesc Queralt (* 1740 in Les Borges Blanques ; † February 28, 1825 in Barcelona ) was a Catalan conductor of the Cathedral of Barcelona and a sacred composer.

life and work

Queralt probably received musical training at Lleida Cathedral . In 1759 he entered the service of Barcelona Cathedral. There he became deputy conductor in 1773. In 1774 he took over the position of Kapellmeister from Josep Pujol . In the same year he wrote the oratorio Triunfo feliz de Santa Eulalia Virgen y mártir barcelonesa (Triumph of the Blessed Eulalia and Martyr of Barcelona). In the second half of the 1870s, numerous oratorios by Queralt were performed in religious centers in and around Barcelona. For example, the oratorio Daniel en Babiloni (Daniel in Babylonia) was performed in the monastery of Sant Pere de les Puelles in 1877 . On Good Friday in 1796, a controversy arose with the organist of the Barcelona Cathedral, Carles Baguer , for a performance of an Oratorio dels dolors (Oratorio of Sorrows) . He had written an oratorio for the same occasion.

Finally, in 1815, Queralt was dismissed from his position as Kapellmeister of the cathedral. He spent the next ten years in Lleida and Saragossa. He returned to Barcelona Cathedral on February 28, 1825.

As a composer, Queralt left only sacred works. He wrote two duets and a Magnificat , a Nisi dominus and a Beatus vir . He is also the author of several oratorios in the Italian style, all of which premiered in Sant Felip Neri de Barcelona . Many of his works are designed for two or three choirs and orchestra. His compositional style is shaped by the contemporary aesthetics of classicism. Queralt was an expert on the compositional grammar of the German and Italian cultural areas of the time. He passed on his knowledge to several students. Baltasar Saldoni should be mentioned here as an example .
