When Baltasar Saldonis was two years old, his mother died. Between the ages of seven and ten, he received musical training from Francesc Andreví at the Santa Maria del Mar Church in Barcelona. From 1818 he completed training at the Escola de Montserrat . There he studied humanities, harmony and composition. In 1822, in connection with the liberal social upheavals, he left the monastery and deepened his piano and organ training with Mateu Ferrer and Francesc Queralt in Barcelona. In 1824 he became organist at the Barcelona church of Santa Maria del Mar. In 1829 he moved to Madrid, where he was advised by Ramon Carnicer . When the Madrid Conservatory was founded in 1830, he was appointed professor of solfeo and singing. After another study visit in Paris, Saldoni was finally appointed professor of singing in Madrid.
Saldoni composed the operetta El triunfo del amor (The Triumph of Love), the operas Ipermestra (1838), Cleonice, regina di Siria (1840), Saladino and Clotilde , Boabdil , the last Moorish king of Granada, Guzmán el Bueno (Guzmán the Good) as well as zarzuelas like La corte de Mónaco (1857, The Court of Monaco). The great symphony A mi patria (To my fatherland) for orchestra, wind instruments and organ must be singled out from his instrumental work. In addition, he wrote vocal works as well as numerous masses, miserere and rosary settings in Catalan.
From around 1850 he devoted himself to studying music history. He published a historical overview of the Escola de Montserrat (1856), the Efemérides de músicos españoles (1860) and the Diccionario biográfico-bibliográfico de efemérides de músicos in four volumes (1868-1881), in which he collected data on Spanish musicians.
