Eden Alene ( Hebrew עדן אלנה; * May 7, 2000 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli singer . She was supposed to represent Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam , which had to be canceled on March 18, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Life

Eden Alene was born in Jerusalem as the daughter of Jewish- Ethiopian immigrants. When she was two years old, her parents divorced and she grew up with her mother, Zehava Varkanesh, who worked as a housekeeper. Alene spent her childhood and adolescence in the Katamon neighborhood in Jerusalem and attended religious school through ninth grade. During her high school years, Alene sang in the YMCA Youth Choir Jerusalem with Jewish and Arab youth from 2014 to 2016. The choir performs worldwide and promotes the peaceful coexistence of Arabs and Jews. Alene is a conscripted soldier in the Israel Defense Forces and lives in Kiryat Gat .

Career as a singer

In October 2017, Alene took part in the third season of the Israeli version of the talent show The X Factor . She performed the song Stone Cold by Demi Lovato . In January 2018 she won the season finale.

At the end of 2019 she took part in the seventh season of HaKokhav HaBa ("The next star"), the Israeli preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest . She won the competition on February 4, 2020 with an interpretation of the song Halo by Beyoncé and was therefore selected to represent Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam . Her song Feker libi (German: "The love of my heart") was selected in another show. The song was written by Doron Medalie and Idan Raichel . In the oriental-African influenced, fast song five languages ​​appear: English, Hebrew, Arabic, Amharic and an invented African language.

After the cancellation of the 2020 competition, it became known that Israel would again be represented by Eden Alene at the ESC 2021 . We are looking for a new song for this participation. Alene would be the first Israeli of Ethiopian descent to compete for her country at the ESC.
