Achinoam Nini ( Hebrew אחינועם ניני; * June 23, 1969 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli singer and songwriter. Outside Israel , she is also by her short name Noa ( Hebrew נועה) known.

Life

Born in Israel to Yemeni Jews , she lived in New York's Bronx between the ages of 2 and 17 . She returned to Israel to do two years of military service, which is also mandatory for women . She then began studying at the Rimon School, a music college for jazz and contemporary music in Ramat Hasharon , where she met the guitarist Gil Dor, her long-time musical partner. She has produced or composed all previously released albums with Gil Dor.

The music styles of this successful duo include pop, rock, blues, R&B, country, country western, folk, Yemenite & Italian folk. Noa has recorded a large number of songs, including those in Italian, French, Spanish, English, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, Hindi, in the Yemeni-Jewish dialect, also Jewish and Christian prayer texts, possibly translated into Hebrew or English.

She had joint appearances or recordings with (among others) Sting , Stevie Wonder , Carlos Santana , Sheryl Crow , George Benson , Johnny Clegg , Zucchero , Peter Maffay , Pino Daniele , Rita Marcotulli , Rita Kleinstein , Massimo Ranieri , Carlo Fava, Florent Pagny , Jean-Jacques Goldman , Khaled , Amine, Lokua Kanza , Jorge Drexler , Joan Manuel Serrat , with Meir Banai, Miguel Bosé , Donovan , Maurane , Éric Serra , Pascal Obispo , Patrick Bruel , Mike Mainieri , Chava Alberstein , Gil Dor, Gil Ofarim , Nini Band, Solis String Quartet, Al Di Meola or Bustan Abraham.

Noa represented her homeland Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow in 2009 . She performed in a duet with the Palestinian Christian Mira Awad and interpreted the song There Must Be Another Way on the subject of the peace process in the Middle East . In the ESC final, Noa and Mira Awad achieved 16th place.

She is married to Asher Barak, a pediatrician , and has three children, Ayehli, Enea and Yum.

Political and social engagement

Achinoam Nini is always committed to peace and balance between Jews and Palestinians. She was on the stage with Yitzchak Rabin shortly before he was murdered by an Israeli extremist at a peace rally in Tel Aviv (November 4, 1995). In addition, she is a member of the 24-person board of directors of the New Israel Fund (NIF) - an international fund that supports numerous civil society projects for equality and democracy in Israel. She also supports the NIF through her artistic work, for example in February 2017 in Zurich with a concert held as a PR and benefit concert.

She is also active in several committees of individual projects that advocate peaceful coexistence between Jews and Palestinians, including the advisory boards of the Umm al-Fahm Art Museum , the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies and the international music project Polyphony Foundation founded in Nazareth . She is involved in the Palestinian-Jewish youth projects Bridge over the Wadi and Kids Creating Peace (in Neve Shalom ), as well as the encounter projects Combatants for Peace and Parents' Circle , among other things at the alternative commemoration event organized by them annually for the Israeli Victim Remembrance Day . Nini continues to publicly support the Israeli organizations Shalom Achschaw , Arik Institute for Reconciliation, Tolerance and Peace and Rabbis for Human Rights , the Israeli-Palestinian organizations Geneva Initiative and Ta'ayush as well as other civil society initiatives and institutions.
