Yom HaSikaron ( Hebrew יוֹם הַזִּכָּרוֹן לְחֲלָלֵי מַעֲרָכוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל וְנִפְגְּעֵי פְּעֻלּוֹת הָאֵיבָה Jōm ha-Sikkarōn lə-Chalalej Maʿarachōt Jisra'el wə-Nifgaʿej Pəʿullōt ha-'Eīvah , German 'Day of Remembrance for those who fell in the campaigns of Israel and the victims of the acts of hatred' ) is an Israeli national holiday.

meeting

Yom HaSikaron is held on the 4th of the month of Iyyar according to the Jewish calendar , always preceding the celebrations of Israel's Independence Day on the 5th of Iyyar. On this day, in 1948, Israel's independence was proclaimed. Both holidays are brought forward by one day (to the 3rd and 4th Ijjar) if the 5th falls on a Saturday, the Sabbath ; if the 4th falls on a Sunday, the two holidays take place on the 5th and 6th.

background

This holiday honors veterans and fallen service members of the Israeli army who died in the modern Middle East conflict . Yom HaSikaron also commemorates the civilians who fell victim to Palestinian terrorism .

procedure

The day includes many national celebrations for fallen Israeli soldiers and underground militants of the Mandate Period, attended by senior state officials and military officers. The day begins the evening before at 8 p.m. (according to the Jewish calendar, the days begin with sunset) with the one-minute acoustic signal of a siren. During this minute, most Israelis remain quiet, remembering the victims and showing their respect. Many religious Zionist Jews are praying for the souls of the fallen soldiers right now. An official act to ring in the day takes place at the Western Wall in Jerusalem . During this act, the Israeli flag is hoisted at half-mast .

A two-minute siren rings out the following morning at 11 a.m. to mark the opening of official memorial services and private memorial meetings, mostly in cemeteries where soldiers are buried or in memorials (such as the Museum of Prisoners of the Underground in Akko ). A newly built memorial hall on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem has been used for the central memorial event since 2018 . In the hall, the names of the 23,645 victims since 1860 (status at the time of reopening) are written on bricks. Many people use the day to visit the graves of their deceased relatives. The day draws to a close between 7 and 8 p.m. and continues with the celebrations of Yom HaAtzma'ut on the Herzlberg, where the Israeli flag is then hoisted all the way up again.

Related to Independence Day

Celebrating Memorial Day just before Independence Day is intended to remind people of the price that had to be paid for independence and what was achieved through the sacrifice of the soldiers. This transition shows the importance of this day to Israelis, most of whom served in the army and are related to people killed while serving in the military.

history

Historically, the date was chosen because during the first year of Israel's existence politicians could not agree on a date for Remembrance Day. When the year ended without a decision, Remembrance Day was held on the First Independence Day (1949). The same happened on the second independence day in 1950, but the merging of the holidays soon revealed logistical and emotional problems, so that on the advice of a public commission, the day of remembrance was moved back by one day. This agreement became law in 1963.

As a special event for the celebrations in 2002, the unique re-enactment of the voyage of the legendary immigrant ship Exodus . Your commander at the time, Jossi Harel , will be on board.

meaning

Certain groups of ultra-Orthodox Judaism do not attach particular importance to the day, but some of them serve in the army and celebrate Memorial Day.
