On the 5th Ijjar of the Jewish calendar , Israel celebrates its Independence Day, the Yom haAtzma'ut ( Hebrew יוֹם הָעַצְמָאוּת Jōm ha-ʿAzma'ūt , German 'Independence Day' ).

The Israeli declaration of independence took place on May 14, 1948 of the Gregorian calendar or 5th Ijjar 5708; The Yom HaAtzma'ut was introduced in the following year 1949 as a reminder of the proclamation of the Jewish state by David Ben-Gurion as a national holiday.

In Israel, Yom HaAtzma'ut is a happy and cheerful holiday .

The Yom HaAtzma'ut follows directly on the Yom HaSikkaron , the day of remembrance for the fallen Israeli soldiers and the victims of terrorism.

calendar

The 5th Ijjar in the Jewish calendar and the 13th May in the Gregorian calendar can differ from one another by several weeks. In the Jewish calendar, days end with sunset, so in the Gregorian calendar they include the evening before dark and the following day until sunset. In addition, all official Independence Day celebrations do not take place on the 5th of Ijjar if it falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. In order to comply with the required Sabbath silence , which also applies from sundown on Fridays to Saturdays in the evening, the official celebrations are brought forward or postponed to the 5th Ijjar by one or two days in order to avoid the celebrations for Independence Day and the day before Yom Ha -Sikkaron to be able to walk without restrictions. Since Independence Day can take place on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th Ijjar, it falls accordingly every year on a different previous evening and the following day in the Gregorian calendar.

procedure

The holiday begins the evening before with a central memorial event at which the chairman of the Knesset gives a speech and twelve torches, symbolic of the Twelve Tribes of Israel , are lit. The Israel Prize has also been awarded since 1953 . The population celebrates the day with barbecues or picnics outdoors, with a visit to one of the Air Force air shows. Several army bases are open to the public to visit, and numerous cultural institutions give visitors free entry. In addition, the international youth Bible quiz will take place in Jerusalem. Many places end the festivities with fireworks. From 1949 to 1968 and 1973, a military parade was held at a different location on Independence Day .

In 2015, the committee for the official state independence ceremony on the Herzl-Berg decided with Lucy Aharish, for the first time an Arab Israeli woman to light a torch in honor of the state at the ceremony in Jerusalem .
