Chava Alberstein
Chava Alberstein ( Hebrew חוה אלברשטיין ; * December 8, 1946 in Stettin ) is an internationally known Israeli singer and composer with a career spanning over 40 years. According to the most popular Hebrew-language Israeli daily newspaper, Jedi'ot Acharonot , she is the most important Israeli folk singer: "If Israel has a real folk singer, it's Chava Alberstein."
Life
In 1951, her parents emigrated to the newly founded state of Israel . There they lived in the Kiryat Chaim settlement . She had her first successes in 1965 as a conscript, performing in front of other members of the Israeli military . From 1980 Alberstein also wrote his own lyrics and music. Although Chava Alberstein became famous mainly for her Hebrew songs, she also feels very attached to the culture of the Jews in Eastern Europe .
Alberstein has recorded over 50 albums, many of which achieved gold and platinum status. Some have also been awarded the Israeli Grammy equivalent, the Kinor David Prize. Her repertoire includes texts in Hebrew , Yiddish , Arabic and English .
She is known as a human rights activist and is committed to Israeli-Arab reconciliation. During the first Palestinian Intifada , she took a critical stance on Israeli occupation policy, her song Chad Gadya was even boycotted by Israeli state radio for some time .
She was married to Israeli director Nadaw Levitan , who died in 2010.
“ Even though I've lived in Israel most of my life, I still question my place in the world. Perhaps this search stems from being an artist, perhaps from being a Jew. I am not really sure. "
