Umm al-Fahm ( Arabic أمّ الفحم, DMG Umm al-Faḥm ; Hebrew אום אל-פחם) is a city in Israel . In 2018 the population was 55,182. The population of Umm al-Fahm consists almost entirely of Arabs.

Surname

The name of the city means " mother of coal" (also "owner of coal"), which points to the economic past of the place founded in 1265. At that time the area was forested and a center for charcoal production .

history

In 1984 the 26 km² Umm al-Fahm received the status of a city administration .

In a suicide attack by a Palestinian on an Israeli bus on line 823 near the city in Wadi Ara on March 20, 2002, seven Israelis were killed and more than 30 were injured, some seriously. The fatalities are Meir Fahima 40, Shimon Edrei 20, Michael Altfiro 19, Aharon Revivo 19, Alon Goldenberg 27, Maharto Mogus 75 and Bella Schneider 51.

Land swap

Because of its proximity to the border with the West Bank and the exclusively Arab population, the city is repeatedly mentioned as a candidate for a possible exchange of territory in a future peace treaty with the Palestinians, which is intended to compensate for the area of annexed Israeli settlements . However, residents are not particularly keen to live under the Palestinian Authority . Avigdor Lieberman most recently made such a proposal in January 2014, which Arab politicians termed ethnic cleansing .
