Jorge Drexler (born September 21, 1964 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan musician .

Drexler studied medicine and became an ear, nose and throat specialist. He also studied music and recorded two albums, which were only released in Uruguay. In 1995 he was invited to Madrid by the songwriter Joaquín Sabina, who is very well known in Spain . There Sabina Drexler introduced other important Spanish musicians. In 1996 Drexler recorded his album Vaiven in Spain with the support of Spanish musicians . Vaiven contained both older songs from Drexler's previous CDs and new compositions. After moving to Spain, four more albums were recorded in the following years: Llueve (1998), Frontera (1999), Sea (2001) and Eco (2004). In 2005 he won the first Oscar for a non-English language song for the composition of the theme song for the film The Journey of Young Che , Al otro lado del río . The song was sung by Antonio Banderas at the Academy Awards .

On November 20, 2014 Drexler was awarded the Grammy Latino for the best album in the category "songwriter" (Cantautor) for his album "Bailar en la cueva" .

Although Drexler now lives in Spain, some of his last three albums were recorded in Uruguay with musicians there. Juan Campodónico and Carlos Casacuberta , former members of the rock band El Peyote Asesino , were the producers of Drexler's albums after Frontera .

Drexler combines traditional Uruguayan music (candombe, murga, milonga), bossa nova , pop music , jazz and electronic music in his music , which leads to very personal compositions. The lyrics of his songs also play an important role. Aside from love, more thoughtful subjects such as the coexistence of cultures and religions are important parts of his work.

Drexler is the father of two sons and a daughter. The first, called Pablo, comes from his marriage to Ana Laan . The mother of his second son Luca, born in 2009, and his daughter Lea, born in 2011, is the actress and singer of the Marlango group , Leonor Watling .
