Pino Daniele

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pino Daniele (2009)

Pino Daniele (born March 19, 1955 in Naples as Giuseppe Daniele , † January 4, 2015 in Rome ) was an Italian musician.

The blues guitarist made a name for himself as one of the most innovative musicians in Italy in the 1970s and 1980s. During his 40-year career he has worked with numerous other musicians from all over the world, including Franco Battiato , Francesco De Gregori , Lucio Dalla , Ralph Towner , Yellowjackets , Mike Mainieri , Claudio Baglioni , Danilo Rea and Mel Collins . Over the years he has played on many major international stages. He has also appeared at concerts with Pat Metheny , Eric Clapton , Chick Corea , Robert Randolph , Bob Berg and Joe Bonamassa .

His music and playing technique were inspired by rock music , jazz by Louis Armstrong and George Bensons and above all by the blues , whereby he combined various musical and linguistic elements and interpreted them in a very personal and creative way. His passion for the most diverse musical genres (from Elvis Presley to Roberto Murolo ) formed the basis for the emergence of the new “Tarumbò” style, conceived as a mixture of tarantella and blues. He also founded the musical renewal movement “Neapolitan Power”.

life and career

The beginnings

Port of Naples

Pino Daniele was born in the Porto district of Naples as the first of six children to a dock worker. He grew up in a financially precarious position. After a few years, as a child, he moved into the house of two better-off aunts. In elementary school, one of his classmates was Enzo Gragnaniello . Daniele stood out as a particularly neat child at the time. He also showed an enthusiasm for music from an early age. At the age of twelve he made his first stage experience at a children's party. He later attended an engineering school and learned to play the guitar by himself, absorbing the protest mood of the 1968 movement .

Pino Daniele made his musical debut with the group New Jet , which he founded with his school friend Gino Giglio. He left the group quickly and then gained important experience in the Batracomiomachia group , founded together with Paolo Raffone, Rosario Jeundano, Rino Zurzolo , Enzo Avitabile and Enzo Ciervo. The latter owned a rehearsal room in the Sanità district , where, in addition to the group, many later protagonists of the Neapolitan music scene came and went, including Corrado Rustici , Edoardo Bennato and Osanna . In 1975 Daniele worked as a studio musician for the first time and played on an album by Mario Musella (only released in 2012) . The following year he was on the album Suspiro by Jenny Sorrenti (sister of Alan ) to hear. He was also involved in the album Le due facce di Gianni Nazzaro by Gianni Nazzaro (also as a background singer ) and toured with Bobby Solo .

In 1976 Daniele also became part of the important group Napoli Centrale as a bassist , where he made important contacts with other musicians, such as the saxophonist James Senese . This made a significant contribution to the musical development of Pino Danieles and was involved in some of his earliest albums, such as Pino Daniele (1979), Nero a metà (1980) or Vai mo ' (1981). In 1976, Claudio Poggi, music producer at EMI Italiana , became aware of a demo by the young musician and produced the first single Che calore / Fortunato with him .

After the debut single, Daniele immediately worked on his first album, which was released in 1977 under the title Terra mia . Musically as well as in the lyrics, the album showed a strong anchorage in the Neapolitan folk music . This debut already contained some songs that were to become classics in Daniele's repertoire: Terra mia , Suonno d'ajere , 'Na tazzulella' e cafè , Libertà and, above all, Napule è , which he wrote when he was 18 and which to himself developed a kind of hymn for the city of Naples. 'Na tazzulella' e cafè was one of his first songs to make it onto the radio, thanks to Renzo Arbore , who was the presenter of the radio show Alto gradimento at the time.

At the end of the 1970s, the second album, Pino Daniele , was released, on which a clear turn away from Neapolitan music towards the blues was noticeable. This also contained some later classics, such as Je so 'pazzo , Je sto vicino a te , Chi tene' o mare , Putesse essere allero , Basta na jurnata 'e sole and Donna Cuncetta .

The 1980s

Pino Daniele (1982)

In the 1980s, Pino Danieles' reputation rose, and in June 1980 he was able to open an Italian concert by Bob Marley in Milan. Also in 1980 he released the album Nero a metà , in which he presented a new Neapolitan sound, a Latin blues with a Mediterranean touch. The title was a reference to the recently deceased Mario Musella. The album was Daniele's first chart success and in 2012 was the only one of his albums to be included in Rolling Stone Italia magazine's list of 100 most beautiful Italian albums of all time (number 17).

In September 1981 Daniele gave a big concert in the Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples, accompanied by Tullio De Piscopo , Joe Amoruso , Rino Zurzolo , Tony Esposito and James Senese, with whom he had recorded the fourth album Vai mo ' in the same year . This formation was the starting point of the musical renewal movement “Neapolitan Power”, which was mainly based on blues, jazz and rock. This background can be seen in the songs Yes I Know My Way , Viento 'e terra , Have You Seen My Shoes and Notte che se ne va . The group no longer played together, however, as the individual members all pursued their solo careers.

Pino Daniele with Alphonso Johnson and Tony Esposito (1982)

In 1982 Daniele began his joint projects with well-known international musicians. On his album Bella 'mbriana , which topped the Italian charts for the first time, Alphonso Johnson on bass and Wayne Shorter on soprano saxophone could be heard, both from the group Weather Report . In 1983 he recorded the album Common Ground with Richie Havens and took part in the album Apasionado by Gato Barbieri . On June 24, 1984 he opened a concert by Carlos Santana and Bob Dylan in Milan. On his next studio album Musicante , Mediterranean sounds met Arabic-influenced melodies, Brazilian rhythms (thanks to the percussionist Naná Vasconcelos ) and the flutes by Mel Collins ; it was the first step towards world music . In the same year Daniele released his first live album Sciò live , with the participation of many well-known guest musicians. In 1985 the seventh studio album Ferryboat was released , in which Steve Gadd , Mino Cinelu and Gato Barbieri were also involved.

In 1987 the album Bonne soirée followed , with contributions from Pino Palladino on bass, Bruno Illiano on keyboard, Jerry Marotta (at the time Peter Gabriel's drummer) on drums, Mel Collins on saxophone and Mino Cinelu on percussion. Steve Gadd and Agostino Marangolo were involved in the 1988 album Schizzechea with Love . The title song Schizzechea won the Targa Tenco in 1989 for best dialect song . During this time he also toured Europe as part of the Night of the Guitar concert series with Randy California , Pete Haycock , Steve Hunter , Robby Krieger , Andy Powell , Ted Turner , Leslie West , Phil Manzanera and Jan Akkerman . The decade ended with the release of Mascalzone latino . The song Anna verrà (dedicated to the actress Anna Magnani ) was one of Daniele's first songs to be entirely written in Italian.

The 1990s

In 1990 the musician took a longer artistic break for health reasons. The following year he returned with the album Un uomo in blues , on which the blues influences and the sounds of the electric guitar were predominant again, for example in O scarrafone , Leave a Message or in the title track. In the same year the album Sotto 'o sole was released , with the songs Quando and O ssaje comme fa' o core . In 1992 Daniele had one of his rare television appearances, together with his friend Massimo Troisi in the program Alta classe by Gianni Minà . Daniele and Troisi founded the running gag Massimo, ho scritto una canzone, mi fai un film? ("Massimo, I wrote a song, will you make me a film?"). This saying, which Daniele put in his mouth , alluded to his song Quando , which had acted as the theme song of Troisi's film Pensavo fosse amore… invece era un calesse last year . In addition, Daniele had previously contributed music to two of Troisis films, Ricomincio da tre (1981) and Le vie del Signore sono finite (1987).

In the early 1990s Daniele separated from his wife Dorina, with whom he had two children, and married Fabiola in 1991. The second marriage resulted in two daughters, to whom the musician dedicated the songs Sara and Sofia sulle note , and a son. From 1993 Daniele performed live again regularly. In May of that year he gave two concerts in Cava de 'Tirreni , which were incorporated into the live album E sona mo' . In the same year the studio album Che Dio ti benedica was released , to which Massimo Troisi contributed a text. International guest musicians this time were Chick Corea and Ralph Towner . Linguistically, Daniele frequently switched between dialect and Italian on the album. The song Sicily was again awarded the Targa Tenco as the best dialect song .

In 1994 Daniele went on a tour of Italy with Eros Ramazzotti and Jovanotti . The following year, however, he toured Italy with Pat Metheny . With the two following albums Daniele reached the height of his commercial success. Non calpestare i fiori nel deserto (1995) moved away from funk influences and the Neapolitan dialect and instead developed a bluesy pop with an oriental touch and borrowed from folk music. The album reached the top of the Italian charts and was one of the best-selling of the year. It also won the Targa Tenco as the best album of the year. The next album Dimmi cosa succede sulla terra (1997) was even more successful. He triumphed at Festivalbar in 1997 and won both the award for album of the year and for the single of the year (with Che male c'è) .

The following year he performed internationally at Pavarotti together with Luciano Pavarotti , together they sang Napule è . At the end of the millennium, Daniele released the album Come un gelato all'equatore, on which stronger electronic sounds and jazz influences predominated; the singer Rossana Casale was involved . The album was preceded by the single Neve al sole . In September 1999 Daniele performed at a Zucchero concert in the Verona Arena .

The 2000s

The influences from the North African music tradition moved into the center of attention in the next studio album Medina , which was released by BMG Ricordi in early 2001. Were involved Salif Keita from Mali, Faudel from Algeria, Omar Farouk Tekbilek from Turkey, Lotfi Bushnaq from Tunisia and the Italian hip-hop group 99 Posse . Among the songs were Via Medina , Mareluna , Lacrime di sale and Senza 'e te . After a tour, the live album Concerto Medina Tour 2001 followed . The following year Daniele suggested a joint tour with Fiorella Mannoia , Francesco De Gregori and Ron , which flowed into the live album In tour , published on Daniele's own label Blue Drag. In the album Passi d'autore (2004) the musician again experimented with new sounds. Together with the Peter Erskine Trio he mixed jazz with madrigals of the 16th century.

With the single It's Now or Never (English cover of 'O sole mio , made famous by Elvis Presley ) he introduced the album Iguana café in 2005 . The percussionists Naná Vasconcelos and Karl Potter were involved . During the Iguana Café Tour , Danieles also briefly reunited with James Senese and Tony Esposito . In 2007 Daniele released the next studio album Il mio nome è Pino Daniele e vivo qui . It was marked by the meeting of Neapolitan and Latin American music , Giorgia , Tony Esposito and Alfredo Paixão were involved . On the subsequent tour he also performed with the Israeli singer Noa .

Pino Daniele (2008)

In 2008 Daniele revived the first formation of "Neapolitan Power" with Tullio De Piscopo , James Senese, Tony Esposito, Joe Amoruso and Rino Zurzolo. Supported by Chiara Civello and Al Di Meola , the group released a triple album with 45 songs, including old hits and new titles. The album was titled Ricomincio da 30 , a nod to the almost 30 years that had passed since the last album and to Massimo Troisi, who made his debut in 1981 with the film Ricomincio da tre (with music by Daniele). The group then successfully went on tour.

On July 8th, 2008 Daniele gave another concert in the Piazza del Plebiscito, together with a large number of guests (including Giorgia, Irene Grandi , Avion Travel , Nino D'Angelo and Gigi D'Alessio ). The event was broadcast live on television and was also released on DVD in 2013 . In contrast to the general enthusiasm of the audience during the concert, the gig with Gigi D'Alessio was given a whistle. In 2009 the album Electric Jam was released , which was preceded by the successful single Il sole dentro di me with rapper J-Ax . He then gave a series of concerts across Europe. On October 1st, Pino Daniele first appeared at the Apollo Theater in New York , followed by a concert in Toronto .

The 2010s

Pino Daniele (2010)

2010 took Daniele at the Crossroads Guitar Festival of Eric Clapton in Chicago in part, where he and Joe Bonamassa and Robert Randolph occurred. In November of that year he released his next album Boogie Boogie Man , which again included duets with various musicians, such as Mina , Franco Battiato , Mario Biondi and J-Ax. In 2011 he appeared at an Italian concert by Eric Clapton and sang with him Wonderful Tonight . In the same year he was also a guest at a Zucchero concert.

In 2012 the new album La grande madre was released , with the participation of Steve Gadd , Chris Stainton , Mel Collins , Omar Hakim , Rachel Z , Willie Weeks , Gianluca Podio , Solomon Dorsey and Mino Cinelu . During the subsequent tour, Daniele also gave concerts in New York, Boston and Washington . In March 2013 he took part in the tribute concert in honor of the recently deceased Lucio Dalla and sang Caruso . In the summer of 2014, however, he went on tour with his album Nero a metà , where he reassembled the original cast for the concert in the Arena of Verona : James Senese, Gigi De Rienzo, Agostino Marangolo, Ernesto Vitolo, Rosario Jermano and Tony Cercola. Guests were Elisa , Mario Biondi , Fiorella Mannoia , Emma and Francesco Renga . Pino Daniele had his last appearance on December 31, 2014 in Courmayeur as part of the television program L'anno che verrà .

Death and aftermath

On the evening of January 4th, 2015, Pino Daniele, who had been suffering from serious heart problems for a long time, suffered a heart attack in his home in Orbetello , Tuscany . He was taken to the Sant'Eugenio Hospital in Rome , where he was finally pronounced dead after several unsuccessful attempts at resuscitation.

In response to Daniele's death, about 100,000 people gathered in Naples' Piazza del Plebiscito on the evening of January 6th to sing his songs. The funeral was divided into two parts and took place on January 7th, first in Rome and finally in the evening as a large public memorial service in Naples under the direction of Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe . Numerous colleagues of the musician reacted to his death, including Eric Clapton , Zucchero , Francesco De Gregori , Antonello Venditti , Roberto Vecchioni , Vasco Rossi and Ligabue . Between January 12 and 22, 2015, the Danieles urn was exhibited to the public in Castel Nuovo and finally transferred to the cemetery of Magliano in Toscana .

Pino-Daniele graffiti on a house wall in Naples

In September 2015, the city of Naples named a street near the house where he was born after the musician. On the first anniversary of his death, Rai 2 aired a special about Daniele. In the summer of 2016, the permanent exhibition Pino Daniele Alive was inaugurated in his honor at the Museo della pace (Mamt) . In 2018 the single Resta quel che resta was released posthumously . On June 7th of the same year a great tribute concert for Daniele was held at the Stadio San Paolo in Naples, in which musicians such as Biagio Antonacci , Eros Ramazzotti , Jovanotti , Antonello Venditti , Giorgia , Francesco De Gregori , Fiorella Mannoia , Massimo Ranieri and Tullio De Piscopo participated were, alongside Daniele's previous band. During the Sanremo Festival 2019 , Daniele was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Prize, which was received by his two daughters. In the same year Poste Italiane also issued a stamp dedicated to Daniele .

Film music

Pino Daniele composed music for various films. In addition to three films by Massimo Troisi ( Ricomincio da tre , Le vie del Signore sono finite and Pensavo fosse amore… invece era un calesse ) these were La mazzetta (1978) by Sergio Corbucci , Se lo scopre Gargiulo (1988) by Elvio Porta , Amore a prima vista (1999) by Vincenzo Salemme and the animated film Opopomoz (2003) by Enzo D'Alò . Daniele wrote the song Assaje for Mi manda Picone (1983) by Nanni Loy (the rest of the film music is by Tullio De Piscopo ). Two of his songs also found their way into the soundtrack of the film Blues metropolitano (1984) ( Yes I know my way and Lazzari felici ). Je so 'pazzo plays a role in the film Tre fratelli by Francesco Rosi (1981), as well as in Maradona - La mano de Dios by Marco Risi (2006). Disperata vita, in turn, found its way into the soundtrack to Fame chimica (2003) by Antonio Bocola and Paolo Vari. Finally, Daniele was also responsible for the music for the film La seconda volta non si scorda mai (2008) by Francesco Ranieri Martinotti . Leading actor Alessandro Siani then used Danieles Uè Man! in his film Il principe abusivo (2013).
