Enzo Avitabile (* 1. March 1955 in Naples as Vincenzo Avitabile ) is an Italian musician. After a longer soul phase, he turned mainly to world music in the 1990s .

Career

From a young age, Avitabile performed as a saxophonist in the bars of his hometown. He graduated in flute from the Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella di Napoli . As a studio musician he could be heard on the saxophone on albums by Pino Daniele , Edoardo Bennato or Antonello Venditti before he released an album himself in 1982: Avitabile . This was followed at short intervals by Meglio Soul (1983), Correre in fretta (1984), SOS Brothers (1986), Alta tensione (1988), Stella dissidente (1990) and Enzo Avitabile (1991). With Easy , which also included a duet with Randy Crawford , the musician completed his first creative phase under the EMI label , which was heavily inspired by American soul and funk .

Now more devoted to world music , albums such as Addò (1996) or O-Issa (1999) were created. The latter also contained the song Mane a mane , which Avitabile had recorded together with Mory Kanté for UNICEF and whose proceeds were used to build schools for girls in Benin . In the 2000s, Avitabile finally concentrated entirely on his home region and began a collaboration with the traditional percussionist group Bottari di Portico , with whom he released the album Salvamm '' o munno ; Other well-known musicians such as Cheb Khaled and Manu Dibango were also involved . From 2006 he held a music ethnology workshop at the Università degli Studi Suor Orsola Benincasa .

Despite the many activities Avitabile also released other albums: Sacro Sud (2006), Festa, farina e forca (2007), Napoletana (2009) and Black Tarantella (2012). For the song Gerardo Nuvola 'e Polvere , written with Francesco Guccini , he was awarded the 2013 Amnesty International Italy Prize. In the same year he released the soundtrack for the documentary by Jonathan Demme with Enzo Avitabile Music Life . Lotto infinito followed in 2016 , with the participation of u. a. Francesco De Gregori , Renato Zero , Giorgia , Mannarino and Caparezza .

At the David di Donatello , the Nastro d'Argento and the Globo d'oro 2017 Avitabile received several awards for the soundtrack to the film Inseparable (Indivisibili) by Edoardo De Angelis . At the end of the year his participation in the Sanremo Festival 2018 was announced alongside Peppe Servillo . The duo reached twelfth place with Il coraggio di ogni giorno .
