Edoardo Bennato (born July 23, 1946 in Naples ) is an Italian cantautore and rock musician .

biography

Edoardo was born in the industrial district of Bagnoli in the west of Naples. Through the radio station of the American garrison stationed nearby, he came into contact with rock 'n' roll music in his younger years , an experience that he described as formative for him. His brother Eugenio is also a songwriter.

Edoardo initially wrote songs for other singers. In 1966 he recorded his first single Era solo un sogno , which was originally intended for Bobby Solo , but was then sung by himself. First he moved to Milan , where he began to study architecture, which he successfully completed. He then lived for some time as a street musician in London and Copenhagen. From 1969 to 1971, the singles Marylou , 1941 and Good-bye Copenhagen were released . But initially it was not successful.

In 1973 he switched to the Dischi Ricordi record company, which was then a reservoir for the Italian Cantautori. There his debut album Non farti cadere le braccia was released, which was highly praised by both critics and audiences.

From the mid-1970s he published some concept albums that had literary characters on the subject, e.g. B. Burattino senza fili ( Pinocchio ), Sono solo canzonette ( Peter Pan ) and È arrivato un bastimento , based on the story of the Pied Piper of Hameln . His popularity had grown so great that he gave his concerts in football stadiums. He often presented his songs in the style of a one man band with guitar , harmonica , tambourine and kazoo .

After switching to the record company Virgin , the album OK Italia was released in 1987 , which also heralded a musical change. While his earlier albums were more folk-oriented and the influence of Bob Dylan, for example, was unmistakable, it was now towards rock music with a sometimes more commercial orientation. He achieved the Italian summer hit of the year in 1989 with the single Viva la mamma .

In 1990 he wrote the lyrics and sang together with Gianna Nannini the official song for the soccer world championship in Italy , Un'estate italiana , for which Giorgio Moroder wrote the music. The song reached number two in Germany and number one in the charts in Switzerland. Later that year, the unplugged album Edo Rinnegato was also released .

In 1992 he released the album È asciuto pazzo 'o padrone under the pseudonym Joe Sarnataro with blues rock in the Neapolitan dialect .

In 2006 he performed for the first time with singer and guitarist Alex Britti , who was 20 years his junior , with whom he recorded the single Notte di mezza estate .
