Un'estate italiana (“An Italian Summer”), also known as Notti magiche (“Magical Nights”) after the beginning of the chorus , is a song by Italian musicians Edoardo Bennato and Gianna Nannini from 1989. The song was written by Giorgio Moroder composed and as the official anthem for FIFA - 1990 FIFA world Cup in Italy known.

Emergence

FIFA commissioned Moroder to compose a song for the 1990 World Cup. The original version was entitled To Be Number One (Summer 1990) and had an English text by Tom Whitlock ; this version was published under the name of the artist Giorgio Moroder Project and used by the RAI as the theme song for its broadcast of the World Cup. Moroder then approached Gianna Nannini and Edoardo Bennato to record the song in Italian. Gianna Nannini was initially against the inclusion because the song did not match her music and was too commercial for her. But for the sake of her father, who was a big football fan, she let herself be persuaded. She wrote new lyrics for the song with Bennato and published Un'estate italiana at the end of 1989 .
