In an interview, Dalla explained the background to the song. He was forced to stop in Sorrento and stay in a hotel there. He learned that he was in the same room in which the tenor Enrico Caruso had lived for some time shortly before his death. In the song he describes in Italian and Neapolitan the difficult and unhappy life of his compatriot. The refrain begins with “Te voglio bene assaje”, which can be translated as “I love you so much” or “I love you so much”.
