Life

Nino D'Angelo - Alberto Amato - Mario Trevi (1992)

D'Angelo comes from a poor area of the Neapolitan suburbs and earned his first money as a shoemaker, parking lot attendant and mobile ice cream seller at the train station before he began his musical career as a singer at weddings and other festivities. His first LP in 1976, A storia mia , was already successful. In the following year he started a concert tour and joined a folk theater; he quickly developed into an idol that was viewed as the modern and youthful edition of Mario Merola . In 1979 he married Annamaria with whom he has two children, Antonio and Vincenzo. Five years later he began a steady career also as a film actor under director Ninì Grassia , where he could be seen regularly in melodramas and comedies until the beginning of the 1990s. Films that also gave him enough space to present a few songs. His parents' death in 1990 overshadowed his career for several years as he fell into a deep depression. But he continued his acting career. He also worked several times with director Alfonso Brescia and alongside Merola and later with director Mariano Laurenti . For his performance as a musician in Roberta Torres Tano da morire and the soundtrack, D'Angelo received the Nastro d'Argento . As a result of this award, the number of his films increased again towards the end of the millennium, only to fade away again afterwards. In 1986 and 2000 he directed twice himself. His films were not shown in German-speaking countries.

D'Angelo's music is heard all over Italy and beyond its borders, although he sings mostly in the Neapolitan dialect. His best-known titles include “Senza giacca e cravatta” and “Nu jeans e na maglietta”. In Naples he is considered a folk hero. As a supporter of SSC Naples , he dedicated a love hymn to the association and the city of Naples, which is still sung by children and adults on the streets today (Forza Napoli). In 1999 he published his biography "L'ignorante intelligent".

In Italy, Nino D'Angelo is an avowed critic of the right-wing populist politician Matteo Salvini . Because of his public criticism, he has repeatedly drawn Salvini's anger on social media.
