Il Mattino is an Italian daily newspaper based in Naples , founded in March 1892 by Edoardo Scarfoglio and Matilde Serao . Over the years the newspaper was able to maintain its position as the highest circulation in the Campania region .

Range, seat

According to Audipress (2011), the newspaper has a reach of 975,000 readers. This makes Il Mattino the most widely read daily newspaper in southern Italy and ranks sixth at national level - after Corriere della Sera , la Repubblica , La Stampa , Il Messaggero and Il Sole 24 Ore .

Since May 1, 1962, the print media has been based in Via Chiatamone 65, opposite the western entrance to the Galleria della Vittoria. The former headquarters of Il Mattino was - behind the Galleria Umberto I . - in Vico rotto San Carlo, today called Piazzetta Matilde Serao in honor of the newspaper's founder.

The editor-in-chief has been Alessandro Barbano since December 2012 , who has also published a number of books on the journalist profession and is tied to La Sapienza University through a teaching position . His predecessors were the journalists Paolo Gambescia, Mario Orfeo (2002–2009) and Virman Cusenza (2009–2012), well-known in Italy.

history

Il Mattino had a golden age in the 1980s when SSC Napoli football club , led by Diego Armando Maradona, won the Italian championship twice - in 1987 and 1990 . During these years the circulation soared to 180,000 and the range increased accordingly.

Today the sold circulation fluctuates between 70,000 and 80,000 copies, also because in the past few decades several other daily newspapers have established themselves with profound coverage of Naples and the region, including Cronache di Napoli , Il Denaro , Napolipiù and Metropolis in the province of Naples alone , as well also the Corriere del Mezzogiorno and the southern Italian edition of la Repubblica .

Since 2004, Il Mattino has been awarding the Premio Giancarlo Sinai journalist prize , named after the courageous reporter Giancarlo Sinai (1959–1985), who was murdered by the Camorra for his articles in the daily newspaper . He was practically executed in the street in front of his apartment with ten shots in the head from two 7.65 mm berettas.
