Kirjat Gat ( Hebrew קריית גת, Arabic كريات جات) is a city in Israel . It was founded in 1954 and had 54,973 inhabitants in 2018. Kirjat Gat received city status in 1972.
history
Kiryat Gat was founded in 1954 as a temporary camp for new immigrants. The name of the city is based on a confusion of Tel-Irani, a hill near the present-day city, with the Philistine city of Gat . The actual Gat is about 10 kilometers north of today's city. Before the War of Independence, the villages of Al-Paluga and Kfar Iraq al-Manshiyya were on the same site. The residents of the villages had to leave their homes during the War of Independence and were not allowed to return to their homes after the war. The intersection that connects Kiryat Gat to the expressway network is called Plugot, after the village that was once at this point. The city itself was founded by immigrants from Morocco who settled near the transition camp. Eventually the interim camp was demolished and the first neighborhoods were established in the city area. New immigrants from over 35 nations lived in these quarters . Throughout its existence, Kiryat Gat absorbed new immigrants from different nations. The most important wave of immigration came from the CIS countries in the 1990s . In 1958 Kiryat Gat was recognized as a local association . In 1972 it was given city status. Today Kiryat Gat counts as a medium-sized city and a developed industrial location. The chip factory Fab 18 of the Intel company has been located here since 1999 with approx. 2,200 employees and approx. 1,700 employees in supplier companies, as well as Hewlett-Packard and Micron Technology in Kiryat Gat. In 2013, the remains of a 1500-year-old Byzantine church were discovered near the city.
