Miriam "Miri" Regev ( Hebrew מרים "מירי" רגב, Born May 26, 1965 as Miriam Siboni in Kirjat Gat ) is an Israeli officer and politician ( Likud ). From June 2005 to July 2007, she was the Israeli Armed Forces' press spokesperson with the rank of Brigadier General . The Knesset it belongs to since 2008, and she has 2015 Minister of Culture and Sport .

Life

Studies and military service

Regev joined the army at the age of 18 and served in the Gadna in the early 1980s . From 1986 she was the press secretary of the Israeli Southern Command , and in 2002 she became the deputy press secretary of the Israeli armed forces. During her military service, she earned a bachelor's degree in adult education and a master's degree in business administration. In 2004 she became the head of the Israeli military censorship. In June 2005, she was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and then served as IDF Press Secretary until 2007.

politics

MPs

In 2008 Regev joined the Likud and reached the 27th place on the list for the 2009 Knesset election, which was ultimately the party's last successful list place in this election. She sees herself as a leading exponent of the right wing of Israeli politics.

In connection with violent riots by Israeli youths at a demonstration against Sudanese refugees in Tel Aviv , Regev declared in 2012: "The Sudanese are like a cancer in our bodies." . The following day, she apologized and assured her that it was not her intention to harm Holocaust survivors or cancer patients. However, z. B. Shalom Achschaw the settlers call a "cancerous ulcer".

After Regev was shown in a photo montage in a Nazi uniform, she said in a television interview in November 2012 that she was "happy to be a fascist".

Minister of Education

In the parliamentary elections in January 2013 and March 2015 , Regev was re-elected to the Knesset, where she took fifth place on the list in 2015 and took over the office of Minister of Culture when the new government was formed.

Regev was already committed to the rights of lesbians and gays in the armed forces during her military service and took part in the Gay Pride Parade in Tel Aviv shortly after taking office as Minister of Culture in 2015 . It caused resentment in conservative milieus.

Regev's administration led to considerable protests in some cases. More than 3,000 prominent Israeli actors and directors signed a petition against their policies, which include "anti-democratic measures" against artists who disagree with the ministries' views. For example, Regev threatened to cut government grants after the Israeli actor Norman Issa refused to appear in front of settlers in the Jordan Valley, and justified this by stating the award criteria. If censorship is necessary, it will censor. A few days later, Issa stated that a clarifying conversation with Regev had refuted the previous rustling of leaves about the subsidy cuts. He kept his grants and agreed to his Arab-Jewish Emina theater performing in front of settlers. Regev praised his theater as an example of lived coexistence. Regev also threatened to withdraw funding from the Jerusalem International Film Festival because a film about the Rabin murderer Jigal Amir was to be shown there. After negotiations with the Ministry of Culture, the film was shown in a private cinema outside of the festival program.

When it became known in August 2015 that the Berliner Staatskapelle was planning a performance in Tehran together with conductor Daniel Barenboim , Regev announced a letter of protest to the federal government. Barenboim, who is an Israeli citizen, is following an anti-Israeli line and blackening Israel at every opportunity. The Iranian government later banned Barenboim's planned appearance with reference to his citizenship.

At the end of August 2015, the head of the Israeli audit office opened an investigation against Regev, because she is said to have awarded a government contract worth 2.5 million shekels to a consultant known to her without the necessary tendering process .

Shortly before the German-Israeli government consultations in October 2018, Israel's Minister of Culture Miri Regev warned German Chancellor Angela Merkel not to interfere in internal affairs. Regev spoke about the dispute over the Bedouin settlement of Chan al-Ahmar, which is to be demolished at the behest of the Israeli government. "I advise her to deal with the problems of her own country," Regev told the news portal Aruz 7 on October 3rd. "We respect Ms. Merkel," the minister continued. "But with all the respect I pay her, I expect foreign politicians who come to visit here not to interfere in internal problems."
