Idan Raichel ( Hebrew עידן רייכל, ʔiˈdan ˈʁaiχel ; * September 12, 1977 in Kfar Saba Israel ), grandson of a Berliner and also of Polish-Russian descent, is an Israeli lyricist , composer and musician . He is known for the Idan Raichel Project ( Hebrew הפרוייקט של עידן רייכל), which fuses electronic music with traditional Hebrew texts as well as Middle Eastern and Ethiopian music . Before the project started, Raichel was a keyboard player and worked with artists such as Ivri Lider .

Life

Idan Raichel started playing the accordion at the age of nine . He let his hair grow long, played gypsy music and tango . In school he learned to play jazz piano .

Raichel served in the Israeli armed forces . After his military service, Raichel became an advisor in a boarding school for immigrants that was attended by many young Ethiopian Jews . Raichel started visiting Ethiopian bars and clubs in Tel Aviv . In April 2007 he traveled to Rwanda and Ethiopia with Save A Child's Heart .

In January 2014, Raichel sparked controversial reactions with statements about torture practice in Israel. Raichel also stated that with his artistic work he also stood up for the State of Israel.

Particular attention was paid to the performance of the baroque song In Silent Night - on September 11, 2014 in the Rykestrasse synagogue in Berlin on the occasion of the Jewish Culture Days 2014 and in 2016 in a spontaneous interpretation with the German countertenor Andreas Scholl and his wife, the harpsichord player Tamar Halperin .

In May 2019 he performed with the 24-person Idan Raichel Project at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv with the song Bo'ee .

Music genre

Raichel's style is influenced by the Middle East, but is also based on Latin American and African music . The majority of his songs are in Hebrew , some are also in Amharic . The songs are sung by both male and female voices. The traditional melodies are combined with modern music.
