Mateu Ferrer i Oller

Mateu Ferrer i Oller (* 1788 in Barcelona ; † January 4, 1864 ibid) was a Catalan composer , organist , orchestra conductor and conductor .

life and work

Mateu Ferrer i Oller studied composition with Francesc Queralt and organ playing with Carles Baguer .

In 1815 he succeeded Baguer as organist at the Barcelona Cathedral. He held this position until the end of his life. In 1827 he became director of the Teatre de la Santa Creu in Barcelona and succeeded Ramon Carnicer . In 1830 he was appointed Kapellmeister of the Barcelona Cathedral.

He was the teacher of musicians such as the composer and musicologist Baltasar Saldoni , the instrumental musician and composer Nicolau Manent and the tenor singer, orchestra director and composer Francesc Porcell .

A Benedictus and a responsory clearly emerge from his compositional work . He also composed an oratorio entitled Nebuchadnezzar , which premiered in the Church of St. Philip Neri, and operatic fragments to be performed at the Teatre de la Santa Creu . He also composed works for voice and keyboard instruments.

Mateu Ferrer was commonly referred to in Barcelona by the nickname Mateuet (little Mateu). He was an extraordinarily talented and highly respected organist in the city. He was known for his outstanding improvisational play based on fugues. His skills in this regard became known far beyond Catalonia. His death in January 1864 caused great sadness. The citizens of Barcelona said goodbye to their organist in a great funeral service in the church of Santa Maria del Mar.
