Francesc Porcell i Guàrdia (* 1813 in Palma ; † May 5, 1890 in Barcelona ) was a Catalan composer , tenor singer , conductor and bandmaster .

life and work

Shortly after his birth in Palma, the family returned to Torredembarra, in the province of Tarragona, where they came from. Here Francesc Porcell took lessons in solfeig , harmony and violin from Isidoro Hernández Recasens, an excommunicated monk . At the age of nine he played the violin in public and directed the band during times when his teacher was not available. In 1826 he began studying philosophy and medicine in Tarragona . In 1827 he moved to Barcelona and earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1829 and a degree in medicine and surgery in 1836. In 1832 he began to study singing with Joan Goula in Barcelona. Here he also met the soprano Caterina Mas , whom he later married.

Both made their debut together in October 1832 at the Teatre Principal de Palma in the opera Norma by Vincenzo Bellini . Later he also sang in Valencia , at the Teatre de la Santa Creu and at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and finally in Bilbao . In 1842 Porcell fell ill and lost his singing voice. From this point on he continued to work as Kapellmeister and conductor in the field of music. From 1842 to 1853, Francesc Porcell worked in various Spanish cities as a conductor, conductor and composer. In 1853 he was appointed choirmaster of the Gran Teatre del Liceu . He held this position until the end of his life. From 1868 to 1874 he conducted the orchestral concerts of the Euterpe Music Society by Josep Anselm Clavé . After Clavé's death, he led the choir and orchestra of this music society until 1875.

In his compositional work we find a Te Deum , a Missa de Glòria , which was premiered in January 1866 in the Barcelona church of Santa Maria del Pi . We also find a gradual , four operas (including El trovador , 1842 and Rosmunda in Ravenna , 1844), a symphony, an allegorical hymn and a Spanish fantasy. He is the composer of the Cançons dels soldats catalans a Àfrica (1859-1860, songs of the Catalan soldiers in Africa).

Francesc Porcell died on May 5, 1890 in Barcelona of complications from a stroke .
