Joan Goula i Soley (born March 30, 1843 in Sant Feliu de Guíxols , † July 16, 1917 in Buenos Aires ) was a Catalan conductor, vocal teacher and composer. Goula was intensely committed to the spread of Wagner operas in Spain.

life and work

Goula studied with Nicolau Manent in Barcelona.

He initially held various positions at the Teatre dels Camps Elisis and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. From 1866 to 1870 he worked as a conductor at the Teatre Principal in Palma de Mallorca . There he founded the Orfeó Republicà Balear choir in 1867, with which he introduced the music of Josep Anselm Clavé . He achieved great success on tours throughout Spain, Germany and Russia. In 1870 he received an offer to go to the Imperial Theater in Moscow. For some seasons he was also the musical director of the St. Petersburg Opera Orchestra . He also conducted in Baden-Baden and from 1873 in Hamburg. His subsequent tour of Germany took him to Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Leipzig and Stuttgart. In August 1875 he presented himself in Barcelona with the first performance of Verdi's Requiem a year after the world premiere in Milan. In 1882 he directed the Barcelona premiere of Wagner's Lohengrin at the Teatre Principal . In 1883 he also directed this work at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. In 1887 he presented the Tannhäuser there . He also directed the Barcelona premieres of Verdi's Aida , Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod , Lakmé by Léo Delibes , Els Pirineus by Felip Pedrell and Tosca by Giacomo Puccini .

In the first years of the 20th century he settled in Argentina. He first founded the Conservatorio de Música de Buenos Aires there . He organized a number of Spanish operas at the Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires . This company was a catastrophe for Goula himself from an economic point of view, as he was personally responsible for the entire organization of this series of events and the project did not pay off economically.

Among Goula's singing students were the soprano Andreua Avel lina Carrera , the tenors Francesc Viñas and Josep Palet , the bass Francesc Mateu and the baritone Ramon Blanchart .

Goula composed various stage works such as the operetta A la voreta del mar (1881, On the Shore of the Sea) by Damas Calvet de Budallés and El testamento de un brujo (The Testament of a Witch) based on a text by Josep Feliu i Codina . Other works by Goula are the dance Clye o el triomf de Venus (1899, Clye or the Triumph of Venus) and a cantata dedicated to the Russian Tsar Alexander II . Goula was one of the 19th century Catalan conductors with the strongest international musical presence.
