Felip Pedrell
Felip Pedrell i Sabaté , in Spanish Felipe Pedrell (born February 19, 1841 in Tortosa , † August 19, 1922 in Barcelona ) was a Catalan composer and musicologist .
Life
Pedrell is considered the father of Spanish national music. He was mostly self-taught. His works include operas (including Els Pireneus , composed 1891, premiered in Barcelona, January 4, 1902), zarzuelas , orchestral works, church and chamber music and songs. During a study visit to Rome he got to know the great tradition of Spanish music that is gathered in the local archives. His concern was to support the Spanish national style, both in the form of historical art music and in lighter folk music.
His musicological studies culminated in the publication of the complete works (1902–1913) by the Spanish Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548–1611). In 1873 he became director of the opera house at the Teatro Circo in Barcelona. In 1894 he went to Madrid as a university professor. This time brought contacts with famous musicians such as Andrés Segovia and Emilio Pujol . In 1904 he returned to Barcelona.
His most important students were Enrique Granados , Manuel de Falla , Isaac Albéniz and Robert Gerhard .
