Finidi George (born April 15, 1971 in Port Harcourt ) is a retired Nigerian football player .

Career

Midfielder Finidi George came to Europe for Ajax Amsterdam in 1993 , where he also became a regular in a team with stars like Jari Litmanen , which won the 1995 Champions League . During his time at Ajax, he was considered one of the fastest players in the league, he is said to have run the 100m distance in under 12 seconds. With the Nigerian national soccer team , he qualified at the same time for the soccer world championship in 1994 in the USA , where Nigeria caused a sensation in international soccer for the first time and reached the last sixteen. He achieved something similar with his national team at the 1998 World Cup in France . In 1996 he had already moved from Ajax to Betis Sevilla . After a one-year interlude at Real Mallorca from 2000 to 2001, he moved to Ipswich Town . There the Nigerian instantly became a fan favorite after scoring twice against Derby County in his second game . In the further course of the season he could not confirm his early form, so he was called a flop by the fans. So it came about that after two years he moved back to Mallorca. In 2004 he ended his career. For Nigeria , he made a total of 46 internationals and scored eight goals.
