The 1994 Africa Cup ( English : African Cup of Nations , French : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the 19th edition of the African continental football championship and took place in Tunisia from March 26th to April 10th . Tunisia stepped in as a substitute host for the originally planned Zaïre , which decided not to host the tournament before the start of qualification. Organized by the African continental football federation Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) twelve teams from Egypt , Ivory Coast , Gabon , Ghana , Guinea , Mali , Nigeria , Zambia , Senegal , Sierra Leone , Tunisia and Zaire took part.
As in previous years, there was also a qualification to reduce the field of participants with the new record number of 39 applicants to the twelve finalists, with hosts Tunisia and defending champions Ivory Coast being automatically qualified.

The game was played with four groups of three teams each. The two best teams in each group then played the tournament winner from the quarter-finals in the knockout system . The games were played in the Stade El Menzah (45,000 places) and Stade Chedli Zouiten (18,000 places) in Tunis and in the Stade Olympique de Sousse (21,000 places) in Sousse.
Nigeria won the tournament, became African champions in football for the second time since 1980 and qualified for the 1995 King Fahd Cup , the forerunner of the later FIFA Confederations Cup .
