The Africa Cup 2002 ( English : African Cup of Nations , French : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the 23rd edition of the African continental football championship and took place in Mali from January 19 to February 10 . After the successful Africa Cup four years earlier in neighboring Burkina Faso , another attempt was made to host the tournament in one of the poorest West African countries.

As in previous years, there was also a qualification to reduce the field of participants with the record number of 51 applicants to the sixteen finalists, with hosts Mali and defending champions Cameroon automatically qualifying. Ultimately, the following teams qualified: Algeria , Egypt , Burkina Faso , Ivory Coast , Ghana , Cameroon , DR Congo , Liberia , Mali , Morocco , Nigeria , Zambia , Senegal , South Africa , Togo and Tunisia .

The game was played with four groups of four teams each. The two best teams in each group then played the tournament winner from the quarter-finals in the knockout system as usual . The games were played in the Stade du 26 mars (capacity: 60,000) and in the Stade Modibo Keïta (capacity: 30,000) in Bamako, in the Stade Abdoulaye Makoro Cissoko (capacity: 15,000) in Kayes, in the Stade Baréma Bocoum (capacity: 15,000) in Mopti, in the Stade Amari Daou (capacity: 15,000) in Ségou and in the Stade Babemba Traoré (capacity: 15,000) in Sikasso.

Cameroon was able to defend its title from 2000 , was African champion in football for the fourth time and was a record winner together with Egypt and Ghana. Cameroon, with the German national coach Winfried Schäfer , also qualified for the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup in France.
