Stade du 26 mars is the largest stadium in the Republic of Mali and one of the major sports venues in West Africa . The stadium is located around 10 kilometers southeast of the city center of the capital Bamako , on the right bank of the Niger .
history
The name of the stadium is an allusion to the military coup against the dictatorial President Moussa Traoré , which took place on March 26, 1991.
The stadium was built by a Chinese company in partnership with Malian companies. The cost was around 25 million euros, two thirds of which came from the Malian government's budget and a loan from the Chinese government.
The stadium with a total covered area of 7 hectares has a central main playing field , an adjoining training field, an eight-lane athletics tartan track and a floodlight system . The arena, which can hold a maximum of 60,000 spectators, is mainly used for football matches. The stadium is the home ground of the Mali national team and was also the venue for the opening and final of the 2002 African Cup of Nations .
