history
Sikasso was founded by King Mansa Douala Traoré of Kenedugu at the beginning of the 19th century . The city remained a small settlement for a long time until King Tieba Traoré made the city the capital of Kénédougou in 1877 . Tieba also built a rampart around the town in 1887 to repel attacks by the Dyula and the French colonial army. The city was able to defend itself against the attacks for over two years. In 1898, however, she had to surrender to the French and the new King Babemba Traoré , the brother of Tieba Traoré, committed suicide.
