Richard Frank "Dick" Celeste (born November 11, 1937 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). Before he began his public service career, he was a Rhodes Scholar .

Early years and political advancement

Dick Celeste graduated from Yale University in 1959 with a Magna Cum Laude grade. In 1961 he continued his studies at the University of Oxford in England. After his return to the USA he acted as assistant to the American ambassador to India.

Celeste's real political rise began in 1970 with his election to the Ohio House of Representatives . Between 1975 and 1979 he was Lieutenant Governor of Ohio. He was then appointed Director of the Peace Corps by US President Jimmy Carter to succeed Carolyn R. Payton . He held this office from 1979 to 1981. In 1982, Celeste was elected the new governor of Ohio.

Celeste took up his new office on January 10, 1983. After re-election in 1986, he could remain in office until January 14, 1991. His term of office was not without criticism of his politics and his government. The Workers Compensation Office has become increasingly inefficient and disorganized. This made the handling of many claims more and more difficult. Investigations into the administration of the government led to the exposure of some criminal activity. The governor was not personally affected by this, but it damaged his reputation.

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure, he founded the consulting company "Celeste & Sabety Ltd." in Columbus . From 1997 to 2001 Celeste was the successor to Frank Wisner as the US ambassador to India . He became president of Colorado College in 2002 , which he remained until 2011. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations . Celeste was married to Dagmar Braun Celeste , with whom he has six children, in his second marriage he has another child.
