Thomas Welles Bartley (born February 11, 1812 in Jefferson County , Ohio , † June 20, 1885 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and politician and in 1844 the 17th  governor of the state of Ohio.

Early years

Thomas Bartley attended Jefferson College in Pennsylvania until 1831 . After completing a law degree, he began to work in Richland County , Ohio in his new profession. There he soon became a district attorney.

Political Promotion and Governor of Ohio

In contrast to his father Mordecai Bartley , who was a member of the Whigs , Thomas Bartley belonged to the Democratic Party . Between 1839 and 1841 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives , and from 1841 to 1845 he was a member of the State Senate . There he was president of the house from 1844 and in this capacity also deputy governor in accordance with the state constitution.

After the resignation of Governor Wilson Shannon in April 1844, the office of governor fell to him. Thomas Bartley served between April 15 and December 3, 1844. This ended the term of office of his predecessor. He tried to be re-elected and was only barely defeated by an internal party candidate. This avoided an election campaign between father and son Bartley in the gubernatorial elections of 1844, since the Whigs Mordecai had named Bartley as their candidate. After his election victory, he succeeded his son Thomas on December 3, 1844. This constellation has remained unique in the state of Ohio to this day.

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure, Thomas Bartley was appointed federal prosecutor for northern Ohio by US President James K. Polk to succeed Charles Anthony . He held this position until 1849. Between 1852 and 1859 he was a judge at the Supreme Court of Ohio , where he was presiding judge for three years. He then worked as a lawyer in Cincinnati and Washington until his death . Thomas Bartley died in 1885. He was married three times and had several children. One of his wives was Susan Sherman, sister of General William T. Sherman and Senator John Sherman .
