Ethan Allen Brown
Ethan Allen Brown (born July 4, 1776 in Darien , Connecticut , † February 24, 1852 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) was an American lawyer and politician and from 1818 to 1822 the seventh governor of Ohio . He also represented this state in the US Senate .
Early Years and Advancement in Ohio
Ethan Brown was born on American Independence Day . He attended the local schools in his homeland, where he also learned French, Latin and Greek. He then studied law with Alexander Hamilton and was admitted to the bar in 1802. He soon embarked on a legal career after moving to Cincinnati , Ohio in 1804.
In 1810 he became judge at the Supreme Court ( Supreme Court ) of Ohio. He held this office until 1818. Politically, Brown was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party . In 1818 he was elected the new governor of Ohio.
Governor, Senator and Ambassador
Brown took up his new office on December 14, 1818. In 1820 he was elected to a second term. His tenure was partially overshadowed by the economic depression that broke out in 1819. Nevertheless, the governor was able to finance the expansion of the school system. In addition, the state's infrastructure, particularly the sewer system, has been improved. At that time, a special commission was set up to deal with the expansion of the waterways.
On January 4, 1822 Brown resigned prematurely from the office of governor to move to the US Senate. Between 1822 and 1825 he represented his state in Congress . He was then from 1825 to 1830 Commissioner of the government of Ohio for the expansion of the canals of the state ( Canal Commissioner ). In 1830, Brown was named ambassador to Brazil by President Andrew Jackson . He held this office until 1834, then until 1836 he worked for the General Land Office in Washington.
That year he turned 70 and decided to retire. He retired to Rising Sun , Indiana, where he had acquired land early in the century. He returned to politics in Indiana after all. Between 1841 and 1842 he was a member of the state parliament . Brown was also active in the Democratic Party and was Vice President of the State Party Congress in Indianapolis in 1852. He died during this event in February 1852.
