William Bebb

William Bebb (born December 8, 1802 in Butler County , Ohio , †  October 23, 1873 in Rockford , Illinois ) was an American politician and from 1846 to 1849 the 19th  governor of the state of Ohio.

Early years and political advancement

William Bebb attended local schools in his home country and then became a teacher himself. In 1828 he founded the "Sycamore Grove School for Boys". He also studied law. After successfully passing his exams and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in his new profession in Hamilton .

Politically, Bebb was a supporter and member of the Whig Party . In 1840 he supported the presidential campaign of William Henry Harrison and in 1844 he was a delegate to the Whig National Convention in Baltimore , where Henry Clay was nominated as a presidential candidate. In October 1846 he was then elected governor of his state with 48.3 percent before the democrat David Tod .

Governor of ohio

Bebb took up his new office on December 12, 1846. During his tenure, more soldiers were recruited to serve in the Mexican-American War . This happened despite the rejection of the war by the governor and his party. Prison reform has been initiated and the budget deficit has been reduced. At the same time, school policy was improved through a higher budget. Bebb did not seek re-election in 1848. His term of office, which should have ended in December 1848, was extended to January 22, 1849, because the legislature was still arguing about the validity of the election of his successor Seabury Ford .

After his tenure ended, Bebb moved to Rockford, Illinois, where he bought a large farm. There he shot an intruder under unclear circumstances. For this he was charged with murder, but acquitted. He later received an administrative post in the federal government's pension office in Washington, DC Politically, he supported Abraham Lincoln at the time . William Bebb died in Rockford in 1873.
