Nancy Hollister attended Kent State University . After that she worked as a housewife. It wasn't until 1980 that she entered the political arena. That year she was elected to the Marietta City Council as a Republican Party candidate . She stayed there until 1984. From 1984 to 1991 she was the city's first woman mayor. Then she was part of the advisory board of Governor George Voinovich , who nominated her as his candidate for the office of lieutenant governor in 1994. She thus acted as his deputy in Voinovich's second term.

When Voinovich resigned on December 31, 1998 due to his election to the US Senate , she had to end his term, which ran until January 11, 1999. This made her the first woman to serve as governor of Ohio, if only for twelve days. It was the shortest term of any Ohio governor. Due to the short term of office, she was unable to set any political accents. On January 11, 1999, she handed over the office to the newly elected Governor Bob Taft . Between 2001 and 2005, Hollister was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives .

She is married to Jeff Hollister, with whom she has five children.
