Rees G. Richards

Rees Griffith Richards (born July 22, 1842 in Swansea , Wales , †  February 10, 1917 in Steubenville , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1882 and 1884 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Ohio.

Career

At the age of ten, Rees Richards first came to the province of Ontario in Canada with his parents . Soon after, they moved to Tioga County , Pennsylvania . He completed an apprenticeship as a wagon maker and later worked in agriculture with his father. During the Civil War , he served in a Pennsylvania infantry unit that was part of the Union Army . He rose to the rank of captain. In 1864 he was captured for six months, from which he was able to escape in February 1865. After the war, he moved to Ohio, where he did business in various cities. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1876, he began to practice this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1874 and 1878 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; from 1878 to 1882 he was a member of the State Senate .

In 1881, Richards was elected Lieutenant Governor of Ohio alongside Charles Foster . He held this office between 1882 and 1884. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 1883 he renounced another candidacy. After his time as Lieutenant Governor, he was no longer politically active. In 1902 he became an appellate judge in Jefferson County . He held this position for two terms. He was also a member of the Freemasons and some veteran organizations, including the Grand Army of the Republic . Rees Richards died on February 10, 1917 in Steubenville, where he had lived since 1877.
