Jabez W. Fitch

Jabez Warner Fitch (May 1823April 5, 1884 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1878 and 1880 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Ohio.

Career

Jabez Fitch attended Cleveland public schools. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1846, he began to work there in his profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He became head of the fire department in Cleveland and in 1851 a member of the local council. In 1855 he became US Marshal for the northern part of his state. He served in an Ohio infantry unit during the Civil War . In August 1864 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago . After the war, he worked in the Cleveland real estate business. From 1873 he headed the Cleveland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals . A year later he also became chairman of this state-level organization.

In 1877 Fitch was elected lieutenant governor of Ohio alongside Richard M. Bishop . He held this office between 1878 and 1880. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He died in Cleveland on April 5, 1884.
