John C. Lee

John Calvin Lee (born January 7, 1828 in Delaware County , Ohio , †  March 24, 1891 in Toledo , Ohio) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1868 and 1872 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Ohio.

Career

John Lee attended his home public schools and Central College in Franklin County . Between 1845 and 1848 he graduated from Western Reserve College in Cleveland . He then taught as a teacher for two years. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1852, he began to work in this profession. Between 1861 and 1864, Lee served as a Colonel and then Brevet Brigadier General in the Union Army during the Civil War .

Politically, John Lee joined the Republican Party . In May 1868 he took part as delegate and chairman of the Republican National Convention in Chicago , at which General Ulysses S. Grant was nominated as a candidate for president. In 1867 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Ohio at the side of the future US President Rutherford B. Hayes . He held this office between 1868 and 1872. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In the presidential election of 1872 he was a Republican elector for the re-election of President Grant. Between 1877 and 1881 he served as the federal attorney for the northern part of Ohio. John Lee died in Toledo on March 24, 1891.
