Robert Taft

Robert Taft (* 26. February 1917 in Cincinnati , Ohio ; † 7. December 1993 ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . From 1963 to 1965, 1967 to 1971 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the first and the 24th  congressional district of the state of Ohio. From 1971 to 1976 he sat for Ohio in the Senate .

Robert Taft was born in Cincinnati to Senator Robert A. Taft . His grandfather was the 27th President of the United States William Howard Taft . His son Bob Taft was governor of Ohio from 1999 to 2007.

Unlike his father, he doesn't wear the middle initial. His father is referred to as Robert Alphonso Taft I , his son Bob as Robert Alphonso Taft II . He is therefore colloquially called Robert Taft junior although there is actually no Robert Taft senior.

biography

Taft studied at Yale University and Harvard University . At Yale he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity . During World War II he served in the US Navy , most recently with the rank of officer . After the war ended, he worked for his father's law firm in Cincinnati. From 1955 to 1962 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives .

He was then until 1965 representative of the 24th District of Ohio in the US House of Representatives. He ran for a seat in the Senate, but had to admit defeat to Stephen M. Young . In 1967 he managed to move into the House again, this time for the 1st district. He held his seat until 1971. He then ran again for a seat in the Senate. He prevailed against Howard Metzenbaum and represented Ohio as a senator until 1976. He gave up his mandate six days before the end of his term in office in order to be able to work again as a lawyer.
