John Quincy Smith

John Quincy Smith (born November 5, 1824 in Waynesville , Warren County , Ohio , †  December 30, 1901 in Oakland , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Quincy Smith attended public schools in his home country and then studied at Miami University in Oxford . Then he worked in agriculture. He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1860 and 1861 he was a member of the Ohio Senate ; in the years 1862 and 1863 and again from 1872 to 1873 he sat as a member of the House of Representatives there .

In the congressional election of 1872 Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Lewis D. Campbell on March 4, 1873 . Since he was not confirmed in 1874, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1875 . Between 1875 and 1877 Smith was the federal government's Indian commissioner; from 1878 to 1882 he served as the American Consul General in Montreal . In the 1880s he switched to the Democratic Party . He died in Oakland on December 30, 1901 and was buried in Waynesville.
