Levi Barber

Levi Barber (born October 16, 1777 in Simsbury , Hartford County , Connecticut , †  April 23, 1833 in Harmar , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1819 and again from 1821 to 1823 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nothing is known about Levi Barber's schooling. He moved to Ohio, where he worked as a land surveyor for the federal government. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In 1806 he became a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . Between 1805 and 1816 he was a surveyor in Washington County . On April 1, 1807, he became an employee of the federal cadastral authority in Marietta. He also worked in his homeland as a bailiff and justice of the peace. During the British-American War of 1812 he was on the staff of Governor Return Jonathan Meigs .

In the congressional election of 1816 Barber was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded William Creighton on March 4, 1817 . Since he was not re-elected in 1818, he could initially only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1819 . In the elections of 1820 Barber was re-elected to Congress in the third district of his state, where he replaced Henry Brush on March 4, 1821 , who had been his successor there two years earlier. Until March 3, 1823 he was able to spend another legislative period in the US House of Representatives. In 1822 he was no longer confirmed in this office.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Levi Barber served as President of the Bank of Marietta . He also served as a curator for Ohio University . He died on April 23, 1833 in Harmar, which today belongs to Marietta, where he was also buried. Since 1803 he was married to Elizabeth Rouse of Massachusetts , with whom he had at least four children.
