Charles William Whalen (* 31 July 1920 in Dayton , Ohio ; † 27. June 2011 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . January 3, 1967 to January 3, 1979, he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 3rd  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Whalen was born in Dayton in 1920. In 1942 he graduated from the University of Dayton with a degree in business administration . In 1946 another degree followed from Harvard University . During World War II , Whalen served in the United States Army , most recently in the rank of first lieutenant . In 1946 he was released from military service. He then worked in the private sector.

1954 Whalen first appeared politically. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. He sat here for a total of six years. From 1960 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1962 he entered his party's primary election for the office of lieutenant governor of Ohio, but could not prevail. He remained a member of the Senate. At the same time he was a professor at the University of Dayton until 1966. In 1966 he successfully ran for a seat in the US House of Representatives. From then on he represented the 3rd District of Ohio there. He was re-elected a total of five times. In 1978 he no longer ran for election. During his political activities, nationally and nationwide, Whalen campaigned for civil rights. He was a declared opponent of the Vietnam War and the Iraq War .

Whalen focused on writing books after retiring from politics. Together with his wife Barbara, he brought out two works. On June 27, 2011, Whalen died at the age of 90 at the National Naval Medical Center .
