Homer E. "Pete" Abele (born November 21, 1916 in Wellston , Jackson County , Ohio , †  May 12, 2000 in Hamden , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1963 and 1965 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Pete Abele attended Wellston High School until 1934 . In 1935 and 1936 he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps . He then played baseball for some time . Between 1938 and 1941 he lived in Lancaster , where he was employed by two companies. From 1941 to 1943 he was a member of the Ohio Motorway Police. During the Second World War he served in the US Army Air Corps between 1943 and 1946 . He then worked for the Autobahn Police for another six months. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1949 to 1952 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . After studying law at Ohio State University and being admitted to the bar in 1953, he began working as a lawyer. From 1953 to 1957 he was legal advisor to a special transport committee. He also represented the City of McArthur in legal matters for some time . In August 1956, Abele participated as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in San Francisco , at which President Dwight D. Eisenhower was nominated for re-election. Between 1954 and 1957 he was also the Vinton County Republican Party Chairman . In 1958 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives.

In the 1962 congressional election , Abele was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat Walter H. Moeller , whom he had defeated in the election, on January 3, 1963 . Since he lost to Moeller in 1964, he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1965 . Between 1966 and 1991, Abele was an appellate judge in the fourth judicial district of his state. He served there several times as presiding judge. In 1978 he was the chief justice of his state ( Ohio Court of Appeals ). He was also a major in the administration of the Autobahn Police. From 1967 to 1991 he swore in all graduates of the Academy of Highway Police in his state. He died in Hamden on May 12, 2000.
