Rufus R. Dawes

Rufus R. Dawes (born July 4, 1838 in Malta , Morgan County , Ohio , †  August 2, 1899 in Marietta , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Rufus Dawes was the great-grandson of William Dawes (1745–1799), a fighter in the Revolutionary War . He attended the public schools in his home country. In 1860 he graduated from Marietta College . During the civil war he served in the army of the Union in which he rose to Brevet Brigadier General until 1865 . He took part in several battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg , and military campaigns. After the war, Dawes got into the lumber business in Marietta. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1880 Dawes was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded George W. Geddes on March 4, 1881 . Since he was not confirmed in 1882, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1883 . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he was back in the wood business. He died on August 2, 1899 in Marietta, where he was also buried. His son Charles (1865-1951) was Vice President of the United States from 1925 to 1929 . Another son, Beman (1870-1953), also became a member of Congress for Ohio.
