Jonas R. Emrie

Jonas Reece Emrie (born April 25, 1812 in Hillsboro , Highland County , Ohio , †  June 5, 1869 in Mound City , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1857 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jonas Emrie attended preparatory schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Hillsboro in this profession. Between 1839 and 1848 and again from 1854 to 1856 he was editor and publisher of the Hillsboro Gazette . He was instrumental in founding Hillsboro Female College . From 1839 to 1841 he was a postman in his hometown. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the opposition party . He was a member of the Ohio Senate in 1847 and 1848 . From 1851 to 1854 he served as probate judge in Highland County .

In the congressional election of 1854 Emrie was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat Andrew Ellison on March 4, 1855 . Since he was not confirmed in 1856, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1857 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

In 1857 Jonas Emrie moved to Mound City, Illinois, where he worked in commerce. He also practiced as a lawyer there again and ran a newspaper. In 1858 he was also a Police Magistrate there . Emrie was also treasurer of the local schools and served as a Masters in chancery in Pulaski County . He died on June 5, 1869 in Mound City, where he was also buried.
